Overview
It is a synthetic hyaluronic acid gel injected into a joint to improve lubrication and cushioning, helping to relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis.
Hyaluronan, also known as sodium hyaluronate, is a naturally occurring substance found in healthy joint fluid. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, allowing joints to move smoothly. In osteoarthritis, this natural fluid can break down, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.
The synthetic form of hyaluronan is designed to restore these properties within the joint. It is most commonly used in the knee, but may also be used in other joints such as the hip or shoulder, depending on clinical suitability.
How the Treatment Works
At Newton Radiology, Hyaluronic Acid treatment is administered over 4 appointments each, 1-2 weeks apart. At the first appointment, the patient will receive a CT-guided corticosteroid injection +/- joint aspiration if there is significant fluid in the joint. At each subsequent appointment the patient will receive a CT-guided injection of Hyaluronic Acid in a sterile environment into the affected joint.
Patients typically see greater results on completion of all 3 injections, with benefits lasting up to 6 months. If required, the treatment can be performed twice a year.
