Overview

Bone Density, also known as Quantitative Computed Tomography, is an advanced imaging technique used to accurately measure bone mineral density and assess bone strength.

Unlike traditional bone density scans, QCT uses CT technology to produce detailed three-dimensional images, allowing for a more precise evaluation of bone quality. This enables clinicians to assess the internal structure of bone, particularly in areas such as the spine and hips, where early changes in bone density can occur.

QCT is commonly used to detect osteoporosis, monitor bone loss over time, and evaluate fracture risk. It can be particularly useful in patients where standard bone density tests may be less reliable, providing a more comprehensive assessment to support clinical decision-making.

A bone density scan is a diagnostic imaging test used to measure bone mineral density, assess bone strength, and help identify the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, monitor bone loss over time, and guide treatment decisions.

At Newton Radiology, we measure bone density using Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT), an advanced CT-based technique that provides detailed three-dimensional assessment of bone mineral density. Unlike conventional bone density scans, QCT evaluates the internal structure of the bone, particularly in the spine and hips, allowing for a more precise assessment of bone quality. QCT can be especially valuable in patients where standard bone density tests may be less reliable, providing clinicians with comprehensive information to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

Patient Preparation

Preparation for a QCT scan is straightforward.

You may be advised to avoid calcium supplements for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment, as these can affect the accuracy of the results. If you have recently undergone imaging that involved contrast dye, please inform our team when booking.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal fastenings or embellishments. In some cases, you may be asked to change into a gown for the scan.

On arrival, you may be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire to ensure the scan is performed safely and appropriately.

frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment for a QCT scan?

Yes, an appointment is required. Please contact the clinic to arrange a suitable time.

You may be asked to avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to your scan. Otherwise, no special preparation is usually required.

Please bring your referral, Medicare card, and any relevant previous imaging or reports.

During the scan, you will lie comfortably on a CT table while the scanner captures detailed images of the area being examined, typically the spine or hips. The scan is non-invasive and painless.

It is important to remain still throughout the procedure to ensure accurate and high quality images. Your radiographer will guide you through each step and ensure you are comfortable.

The scan itself is relatively quick and is usually completed within 10 minutes. Your total appointment time may be slightly longer to allow for preparation.

Specific Medicare eligibility criteria apply to QCT bone density scans. If you meet these criteria, your scan may be fully bulk billed. Our friendly staff will discuss your eligibility and explain any applicable fees at the time of booking.

Your images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and a report will be sent to your referring doctor within 48 hours. Once the report has been finalised and sent, you will receive a text message advising you to discuss the results with your referring doctor.
