Calcium Score
Overview
A calcium score, also known as coronary artery calcium scoring, is a specialised CT scan that measures the amount of calcium in the walls of the arteries supplying the heart.
This scan helps identify the build-up of calcified plaque, which is a marker of coronary artery disease. The results are provided as a calcium score, which can help estimate your risk of heart attack or stroke over the next 5 to 10 years.
CT Calcium Scoring is a non-invasive procedure that provides valuable information for early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Patient Preparation
A low and steady heart rate is important for accurate imaging.
Please avoid the following prior to your scan:
- Caffeine products including tea, coffee, decaffeinated beverages, soft drinks and chocolate for 24 hours
- Medications for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra or Cialis for 72 hours
- Exercise on the day of your scan
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal. You may be asked to change into a gown if required.
You may also be asked to remove jewellery, watches or other metal objects before the scan.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and bring your referral, Medicare card, concession card if applicable, and any previous imaging.

What can I expect during my calcium score scan?
On arrival, your radiographer will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
You will lie on the CT table, and small electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm during the scan. This allows the scanner to capture clear images between heartbeats.
The scan is quick and painless, taking approximately 5 minutes once you are positioned.
Do I need an appointment for a calcium score scan?
Yes, an appointment is required. Please contact the clinic to book a suitable time.
Is there any preparation required?
To ensure accurate results, you must avoid caffeine (including coffee, tea, coke, chocolate, and energy drinks), strenuous exercise, and certain medications before your scan. Please follow the preparation instructions provided at the time of booking.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring your referral, Medicare card, concession card if applicable, and any previous imaging.
How long does the scan take?
The scan itself takes approximately 5 minutes, although your total appointment time may be longer.
How much does a calcium score scan cost?
A Calcium Score scan is not covered by Medicare and involves an out of pocket fee. Our team will advise you of the cost at the time of booking.
